When I first applied to be a STEP Topic Lead, I wasn't completely sure what to expect. I knew I cared about making a lasting difference for students beyond my own institution, but I didn't realise just how much I'd learn, or how much of a difference I'd be able to make.

If you're thinking about applying, my advice is simple: go for it.

Being a Topic Lead gave me the chance to take something I was passionate about and turn it into meaningful conversations and real action. Knowing that my ideas could help shape the student experience beyond my own institution was incredibly rewarding, and it reminded me just how powerful student voices can be.

Without a doubt my favourite part of being a Topic Lead was working with everyone involved in STEP. You'll work alongside brilliant students who genuinely want to make a difference, and you'll be supported by staff who encourage you to try new things and help you every step of the way. You'll also have the opportunity to connect with a range of organisations and to further enhance your understanding of the education sector.

The best way to make the most of your time as a Topic Lead is to make sure that you're willing to get involved, share your perspective, and be open to learning. You'll grow into the role, and before you know it, you'll be doing things you never thought you'd have the confidence to do.

Looking back, becoming a STEP Topic Lead is one of the best decisions I made during my time as a student. Not only did I have the chance to make a positive impact, but I also grew so much as a person. I also built a network of inspiring and welcoming individuals who helped make the experience even better than I could have imagined.

What you'll take away

Along the way, you'll build skills that are useful wherever your future takes you, including:

• Confidence in sharing your ideas and representing students.
• Leadership and project management experience.
• Communication and public speaking skills.
• Teamwork and collaboration.
• Building networks with students, staff, and sector organisations.
• Influencing positive change and seeing your ideas make a real difference.

Most of all, you'll leave knowing you've helped make things better for other students. If you're looking for a role where you'll be challenged, supported, and genuinely listened to, I can't recommend becoming a STEP Topic Lead enough. You never know where it might take you.
